We're taking a look at our mission statement, drafted in 1992. As we think about the words we use to define our work, it's interesting to assess how we have changed yet remained the same. In 1992 we talked about needs, leadership, support, quality of life. Our internal discussions were focused on agencies, programs, allocations, campaign goals, fair share.

Today we talk about the common good, investments, improved lives, coalitions, and mobilization. Our internal discussions are focused on outcomes, impact, stakeholders, partnerships, capacity, sustainability. There are of course common themes woven among these words. The difference is really about United Way's shift from administrator to facilitator.

Our words are more about actions and less about organizations. Our connections are more focused on individuals - be they donors, volunteers, or recipients of services. It is my hope that every person reading these words will feel a connection and respond as described by these words: give. advocate. volunteer.
