Friend to FriendSince 2001, the effort has provided approximately $138,000 from United Way’s community support budget and the remainder from individual contributions – to assistant Madison County residents who struggle to pay utility bills. Friend to Friend was originated with former Anderson Mayor Tom McMahan in the 1980s when the community was facing both a difficult economy and a harsh winter. The program encourages people to dig in and help their neighbors get through the winter. In 2001, City of Anderson Homeless Administrator Greg Graham dusted off the program and asked United Way to be a partner. United Way provides fiscal management of the fund with 100 percent of individual contributions going directly to program support. United Way also provides financial support beyond those individual contributions to expand the program to the entire county. The Community Access Network provides client screening and issues vouchers for utility payments. Over the past five years, 500-700 persons have participated annually in the campaign.
