Dick May 2008 Volunteer of the Year
Dick May was announced as United Way of Madison County's 2008 Volunteer of the Year at the United Way of Madison County's annual meeting March 11. This annual award recognizes the achievements of outstanding volunteers that have contributed time, talent and financial support to our community. Dick will also be recognized April 3 at the Indiana Association of United Ways State Leaders Conference in Indianapolis.
Born and raised in Anderson, Dick, a CPA for RL May & Company and United Way of Madison County Board Member, unfailingly serves his family, employees, clients and countless others through his volunteer service to the community. His selfless personality attributes to his ability to consistently give back to the Madison County community. Dick explains his reasons for volunteering by saying, "In all areas of my life, I seek to use the abilities and knowledge I have been blessed with to help enable individuals, organizations and businesses reach the goals they have before them." Dick's involvement with the United Way began in the early 1970s when he worked with the organization's financial-statement audits. From there, he worked with the campaign and supported the United Way in various other roles including serving on the Board of Directors since 2000. Currently, Dick volunteers for the Chamber of Commerce of Anderson and Madison County, the United Methodist Home and the Anderson Noon Kiwanis Club. He is a member of Saint Matthew United Methodist Church, serving on various committees and as a lay representative for the denomination's annual conference. Dick graduated from Anderson High School in 1961, going on to graduate from Indiana University with a B.S. in Accounting in 1965 and completing his MBA from IU in 1967. He then became a certified public accountant and began his career with a national CPA firm in Indianapolis. He returned to Anderson in 1970, where he founded the R.L. May Company. Dick has been married to Paula for 37 years and has two daughters and three grandchildren. President Nancy Vaughan said, "I have always appreciated being able to count on Dick's advice and counsel. He is a tireless advocate for community work and has encouraged many of his peers to lend their business expertise to the enterprise of non profit service. But most of all, I appreciate Dick's true and good heart and ready smile." Dick- as humble as he may come across at times- proudly boasts of himself as "the one who says what they think, sometimes even when not asked." Through his work with United Way and other non profit agencies, Dick has acquired respect and gratitude for those that serve our community. He said, "I am still awed at times at the wisdom, dedication and knowledge that I witness from those that serve on the United Way Board and the agencies who strive to help us as individuals and as a community. I feel privileged to work with them." Send this page to a friend |
