ALICE—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed households in Madison County, 37% of our population, are struggling, hard-working individuals and families looking for ways to make ends meet. Many of these ALICE households will spend an average of $200 of their limited funds to complete their taxes each year. One in five tax preparers do not know how to access tax credits available to them such as the Earned Income (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). H & R Block partnered with United Way Worldwide to create My Free Taxes, a free online tax preparation and filing product. United Way of Madison County and RSVP have enhanced My Free Taxes by developing sites where individuals can go to a local computer lab and receive help from a My Free Taxes Mentor while filing their own taxes.
What Can I Do?
You can volunteer as a My Free Taxes Mentor through RSVP!
RSVP volunteers will work in locations around the community to ensure individuals are able to complete their tax returns online. With the help of My Free Taxes Mentors, clients will save by using this service in place of a paid tax expert.
What Do I Do?
Sign up today for the training to be held in January 12, 2017, 8:30 am -12:30 pm at the Anderson Impact Center. All My Free Taxes Mentors will take a half-day IRS training to help learn the basics of tax preparations. You will also learn how to help someone navigate the My Free Taxes website and simple tasks such as setting up an email account. You work according to a schedule, but you can choose how often you work. My Free Taxes runs from February 1 - April 15.
Sign up for RSVP and become a volunteer that wants to make a difference. With the guidance of the United Way staff you will become the best MoneyTalk volunteer you can be! Not quite 55 years old and still want to help? That's okay!
