THRIVE

United Way of Madison County has embarked on a bold, new community call to action – Madison County THRIVE.

Madison County THRIVE is not a new initiative or program. It is an evolution in our approach to supporting hard-working, lower income families in their own efforts to achieve what every family wants and needs to THRIVE:
  • Good jobs with good wages
  • Financial stability
  • Success for their children

WHY THRIVE FOCUSES ON GOOD JOBS WITH GOOD WAGES & FINANCIAL STABILITY

37% of county households struggle with poverty and are unable to earn enough to afford their families’ basic needs.
* - HUD, NACARRA, USDA, BLS, IRS, and state treasury
Families in our community are living on the edge, surviving paycheck-to-paycheck, unable or barely able to meet their expenses—and just one doctor’s visit or car problem away from crisis. They work, sometimes two or three jobs that pay low wages, but lack the means to better their situations.

WHY THRIVE FOCUSES ON SUCCESS FOR CHILDREN

• Children who have not developed some basic literacy skills by the time they enter school are 3 - 4 times more likely to drop out in later years.
- National Adult Literacy Survey, (1002) NCES, U.S. Department of Education
According to the most recent data, 51% of the children in our county started kindergarten without the skills needed to succeed in school last year. Children who begin school behind often stay behind and are at higher risk of dropping out. Without an education they face a lifetime of struggle. The cycle can be broken by preparing our youngest children with the skills needed to be successful in school. Because when a child succeeds in school, it can set them, no matter their background, on the path to success.

WHAT WILL UNITED WAY THRIVE OFFER MADISON COUNTY FAMILIES AND CHILDREN?

  • Birth to Kindergarten supports that reach families and child care providers
  • Employment training, financial skills, micro loans and more to build financial futures
  • Emergency assistance and connection to services when the unexpected happens
This is why United Way will be focusing its work around one broad goal we call Madison County THRIVE in the years ahead. When individuals THRIVE, so does our community.
